Life or Death design

Working with Chelsea Funeral Directors, I have designed a campaign that aims to put Celebrating Life at the heart of dealing with death.

Funeral care is something we accept as being a bit morbid and generally scary, this campaign aims to bring a breath of fresh air in an often taboo subject. With the approval of Westminster Cathedral, the head of the Catholic Church in England, this campaign by the family run Funeral Directors is a breath of fresh air focusing on life rather than death.

Christmas cards 2014

Selection of my Christmas card designs 2014

Selection of my Christmas card designs 2014

I have been working on Christmas in some shape or from since July, and am really proud to finally show the designs I have made for Christmas cards this year. Including geometric winter animals, typographic jolly songs and and old favourite from Christmas past. I would love to hear what people think! They’re finished in various ways, including hand hole punched boarders and special pearlescent paper. These are available to buy online at danmackey.bigcartel.com and also in person at the Brighton Artist Open House where I’m selling at 11 Rugby Road weekends from 29th Nov – 14th Dec. They’ll be lots of posters, prints, gifts and festive treats! Also keep an eye on the website as it expands in the new year. Good Typography Christmas Card 2014 Cool xmas design Christmas animals by designer to buy

#Sound familiar?

Facebook poster design

Inspired by the original Sh*t Girls Say and a realisation that everyone is obsessed with the same things in relation to social media, I’ve designed a series of Typographic posters with phrases we don’t even realise we say. Any suggestions for more unintentional catch phrases people use daily?

Alternative Shy Christmas Cards

I’ve crafted Christmas cards in same style as my Shy poster series, that featured different printing techniques and subtle colour changes to show a subtle, typographic message.

The worst thing about these cards is that they don’t photograph well! The Christmassy message written on each I’ve got to a perfect amount of visibility (through lots of trial and error).

The first card is fairly traditional with the lyrics “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” on the front in… white. The minimal, effortlessly cool style of the white on white is perfect for those that like a twist on standard Christmas cards.

The other cards take their inspiration for the Pogues song Fairytale of New York. These ‘shy’ cards have had a Christmas drink and are now a bit sweary.

You’re a bum
You’re a punk
You’re an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it’s our last

Paper Jam

Paper jams are my least favourite type of jam. I’m sure I get them more than anyone else when printing…  My take on a paper jam transforms it into a craft piece that anyone can put together. Three different versions in magenta, cyan and black, these Paper Jams are not like the ones you are used to.

The templates for these are available to download, print and make up below:

SHY POSTERS #2

I wanted to follow-up on a previous post  on typographic posters I designed to play around with printing techniques on black. This time I have optimised them to view on the web to make posting them easier!

Normally I like design that is easy to appreciate at first glance, with an upbeat feel. For these posters, the ‘Shy’ theme is a bit more gloomy and dark with the message being hard to spot.

Ideally I would have liked to make this set in white to contrast the black series, with Spot UV text, but for ease I have gone for the print designers favourite, CMYK.

My ‘Family’ Business Card Design

I have been doing an update of my own branding including my portfolio taster, CV and business cards. As it is hard to stand out from other great graphic design and make things personable to me, I have chosen to introduce my distant family members to everyone I pass my cards out to. Taken from a scrap-book handed down in my family, I’ve chosen some of the real life family characters that stuck out to me.

Hopefully they stick out to others and make an impression. One thing I feel about graphic design mailers and identity design is that they do work best when simple and modern, but often lose the personal touch that sets each of us apart.
